The seat-back map shows a broad route. The window shows clouds. The question is more specific: which U.S. state is directly below the aircraft right now? You do not need paid Wi-Fi to attempt that check. You need a usable satellite fix and an app that can translate coordinates into a state.
The short answer
SkyLocation can show the U.S. state for a detected location inside the United States. State names appear only in the USA. A fix is not guaranteed inside every aircraft, so always read the accuracy value before trusting it.
Why airplane mode does not automatically disable GPS
Apple explains that Location Services uses available inputs including GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspots, and cellular towers. Airplane mode removes radio connections required by the airline, but satellite reception may remain available. The practical limit is the aircraft itself: the metal fuselage, your distance from a window, window coatings, and the angle to the satellite sky can all weaken reception. How to identify the state below your flight
- Keep airplane mode enabled and follow the crew's instructions.
- Sit near a window when possible. Hold the iPhone close to the window without blocking other passengers.
- Open SkyLocation and request a current fix. Give the receiver time to hear enough satellites.
- Check the accuracy radius. A large or stale radius means the displayed state may not match the exact point below you.
- Read the nearest city, country, and U.S. state shown with the detected location.
What the state name actually means
The state is resolved from the coordinates reported by iOS. It describes the state containing that detected point. It is not a prediction from the flight number, the airline route, or a live internet feed. Near a state boundary, even a valid but imprecise fix can fall on the other side, so the accuracy number matters.

Why this works offline
SkyLocation does not need a remote reverse-geocoding request for its core location names. It uses bundled place and boundary data on the device, so a usable coordinate can become a city, country, and U.S. state without cabin Wi-Fi. The calculation stays on the device.
